The Bunkhouse, Aldbury, Buckinghamshire, HP23 5SE

Taught schools’ sessions take place at the Bunkhouse, a dedicated learning space which features a spacious classroom with plenty of room to store lunches, coats and bags. The Bunkhouse is situated on Toms Hill Road (called Kiln Road on some map apps), only a mile away from the Visitor Centre, but in a much quieter part of the forest.

Facilities include: A large heated/cooled room for teaching, with space for 60 children. There are accessible toilets, indoor and outdoor lunch areas, and a secure outdoor play space for children. We provide free tea and coffee for adults during lunchtime and there is parking for a single coach and several cars - further details are listed below.

The Bunkhouse, Ashridge Estate

Our education facility is based at the Bunkhouse on Toms Hill Road (called Kiln Road on some map apps). Turning off the B4506, towards Aldbury, the Bunkhouse is on the right, less than ¼ mile from the junction.

There is coach parking, for one coach only, on site (not suitable for a double-decker).

Bunkhouse Facilities

Coach and Car Parking
On-site parking is available for one single-decker coach (not suitable for double-deckers) or several cars. The coach and driver are welcome to stay for the duration of your visit.

Spacious Teaching Room
A large, heated and cooled indoor room accommodates up to 60 children. It’s ideal for teaching sessions and indoor lunch on rainy days.

Secure Storage
The Bunkhouse is locked while you're in the woods, providing a safe place to leave bags and lunches. Please avoid leaving valuables behind.

Toilets
On-site toilet facilities include a disabled-access toilet. A private room next to the toilet can be used for changing young children, though there is currently no fixed changing table.

Staff Kitchen
Adults are welcome to free tea or coffee at lunchtime. Drinking water is available to refill bottles. There’s a large fridge to keep lunches cool in hot weather and a freezer available for pre-frozen ice pops or lollies (please let us know in advance).

Picnic and Play Areas

There is a large picnic field with space for children to eat and play, as well as a fenced area for the youngest children, featuring toys and natural building materials.

Private Woodland Access
Exclusive access to surrounding woodland. The site is on private land with no public footpaths, and gates remain closed for safety and privacy.

Mobile Signal / Telephone
Mobile reception is available but may be patchy due to the rural setting. Currently, there is no dedicated phone line for the Bunkhouse - we’re working on this with the National Trust.

Shop Access
There is no shop on-site, but we can arrange small souvenir items (e.g. pencils, bookmarks) from the National Trust shop if requested in advance.

Café
There is no café at the Bunkhouse, but adults will be provided with complimentary hot drinks at lunchtime.

Waste Disposal
There is no rubbish collection at the Bunkhouse. Please bring bin bags and take all waste back to school with you. Spare bin bags are available if needed.
